“Imagine a landscape of open woodland and gently undulating plains, a place where giant wombats the size of donkeys wander, or where Koorie camps dot the area around the Yarra River, where Caulfield and Carrum are luxuriant places for food gathering and ceremonial meetings.”
The above passage is taken from the informative and very readable 1985 book, ‘Aboriginal Melbourne -The Lost land of the Kulin people’ by Gary Presland. Gary left school at the age of 16 and joined the Royal Australian Navy. He later studied at La Trobe, London University, and the University of Melbourne. His research interests are in Aboriginal and natural history of Melbourne. One important contribution he made was the transcription and editing of the unpublished journals of George Augustus Robinson, Chief Protector of Aborigines in the Port Phillip District, 1839-1849.
