First Footprints

Dec 5, 2025 | First Nations Friday

Wominjeka fellow travellers. Welcome again to FNF and thank you for travelling with me on the road to treaty and reconciliation as we explore a tiny fraction of the histories and lore of the world’s longest existing continuous cultures, that of the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders.

Following on from our meeting with Nillumbik Reconciliation Group, NRG, I would like to thank Jan MacKenzie the former president of the group for her very kind donation of books to our Allwood library. We are slowly establishing a library of books concentrating chiefly, though not exclusively, on the First Nation peoples of Victoria. Though we are aware that many of the traditional lands of these people traversed both sides of the state borders, that were created by colonial powers such is the case of the lands of the Yorta Yorta nation that encompass both sides of the river Murray/ Dhungala.

One of the books donated by Jan was ‘First Footprints’ by Scott Cane based on an ABC series by the same name. I think the series was first aired in 2013 and is currently available for viewing YouTube. I highly recommend both the book which is now available for loan at our Allwood House library and/or the four-part series.

So many ‘first time in recorded history’ items are mentioned in the series, i.e. the first depiction of the human face in art, earliest ritualistic burial denoting a spiritual ritual and belief in an afterlife and so many more milestones on the evolution of the artistic, spirituality and ingenuity of mankind happened right here on this great land we call Australia.

So come along to our Festive Bash tomorrow (Saturday 6th Dec), get a free membership card to join the Allwood library and start reading!

Till next week Triganin – see you soon.
