In 1836, Henry Arthur, the nephew of Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania’s) Governor, George Arthur, was one of the founding members of John Batman’s ‘Port Phillip Association’ that took out a lease on land in the Diamond Valley. Soon afterwards, Cornelius Sharpe Haley and his wife, Jane were residing in the parish of Nillumbik, in a slab and shingle roofed cabin on a run of some 160 acres that they called ‘Allwood’.
The Haleys also leased an additional 9,280 acres that extended from Allwood towards Kinglake.
