Welcome to our website we hope you find our site useful and inviting
The historical Allwood Neighbourhood House in the heart of Hurstbridge township is one of our best community resources. Established in 1985, Allwood House has been operating as a Neighbourhood House with assistance from the Shire of Nillumbik and with Neighbourhood House Co-ordination Program funding from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Allwood’s superb garden setting and Victorian old-world charm is relaxed and welcoming, creating a wonderful environment for learning. It is an excellent venue for trainers, facilitators and ‘home grown experts’ to share their talents, skills and knowledge.
Rooms can be hired at very reasonable rates to enable affordable practical courses and workshops that add value to participant’s lives and to the spirit of community. Allwood House staff and committee are open to all ideas, suggestions and feedback on courses and other activities.
Allwood House Update October 2020
We are currently developing a new program of activities for 2021 and would love to hear about what type of activities, courses and workshops you would like to offer or participate in.
Tutors! We have employed the services of a professional video maker and would be happy to assist you to create a short video on your specialty, that can be posted on Allwood’s social media and your own sites.
We are offering a small grants program for community led events to run in the first half of 2021, details are on our website – (Community Activity Grants) https://www.allwoodhouse.org.au
Even though we have been closed, things are happening at Allwood and we are looking to the future.
Allwood Neighbourhood House has been closed for community activities due to the pandemic since mid-March 2020, this has been disappointing as we had big plans for commemorating our 35th year anniversary of services to the Hurstbridge & districts communities. We are now looking forward to the new year and joyfully celebrating with you all.
During this unprecedented shut down, staff and tutors have maintained contact and fostered friendships with students and the community and continue to support each other through these challenging times.
Over the past few months, the Management Committee have overseen the repainting of both meeting rooms in a heritage style, hosted free art therapy sessions, sponsored an online Nature Art Project and staying connected with the community through our Facebook page.
The Allwood Committee and Nillumbik Shire Council have partnered to build a full return deck on the house, we have awaited a verandah deck for many years. Allwood House did have a deck, prior to the building refurbishment in 1984. Happily, the project is about to commence, the works should be completed by the end of the year. Cause for celebration indeed!
